Week 3 Blog Topic

I am very interested in science, so I think my major would probably be in biology or chemistry. I’ve always wanted to be a doctor, so those two majors would be useful for getting into medical school. Another job that would be interesting would be a geneticist, who studies genetics. A common job to biology majors is a microbiologist, who studies small life forms and investigates the growth of microscopic organisms, virology, immunology, etc. I don’t know much about this field, but it sound interesting as well.
The lowest-paid MD make about $66,790 a year, while some types of surgeons can make an average of $464,500 a year. The average MD salary is $191,520 a year. All geographic locations require doctors, so the salary is probably very similar across the United States. Becoming a doctor requires four years of medical school and about 7 years of residency. Doctors need to be professional, but kind to make patients comfortable, and also willing to help anyone with anything.
A geneticist’s salary in the US is about $57,000 a year, although medical geneticists can receive a much higher annual salary of between $90,000 and $125,000. It depends. Education also depends. Some high school teaching or lab assistant positions might only require a bachelor’s degree, while research geneticists typically complete a doctoral degree. Geneticists mostly research, so they must be diligent and have an extensive background in various areas of science like biology and chemistry, but they do not need to be as comfortable with communication like doctors do.
Microbiologists make about $57,663 a year. To become a microbiologist, a  person needs to complete a bachelor’s degree program in microbiology. Microbiologists, like geneticists, mostly research, so they must have a solid background in science and be diligent workers.

  1. This is very detailed, and I think knowing the details about possible jobs will definitely help you in the future. I've noticed that the average pay for most jobs tends to be higher in urban areas, so maybe that also applies to the jobs you're writing about.

  2. I like that although you are doing a media internship, you are hoping to go into a science career. Being a doctor requires people skills, but being a geneticist or microbiologist does not, so I wonder which skill set you are more suited for. Good luck!
