Work Readiness Skills

Positive
Diligence—The first week of our internship, our supervisor, Catriona, announced that we were going to be doing interviews with prominent environmental leaders. I was very excited to do this, so I took initiative and contacted my group members and was very involved in the process of formulating questions. I felt that this dedication helped me be very prepared for the interview, and I now feel confident that I have good content for my radio story.
Working with others—For most of our internship, we are working in smaller groups with several other interns. The first few weeks of my internship my group communicated very well with each other both in coordinating questions and in making sure that we were doing the necessary work and research to prepare for the interview. As a result, our group felt very confident asking our questions at the interview.
Negative
Communication—I will be missing several days of my internship next week and the week after, and although my supervisor knows this, thus far I have not asked her about the work I need to make up. I need to become better at communicating with her in advance about what needs to get done, as now I have very little time before I leave to complete make-up work. I am often shy or hesitant to write an email or contact people, and I need to become better at this.

  1. Danielle,
As a member of your group in our internship, I can personally say that your diligent work and ability to help others was essential to our group's success. You are a committed worker that makes sure to get the job done, and if you ever feel a lack of motivation to maintain this standard for your work, you should know it truly does pay off in the long run. I know from personal experience that failing to complete high-quality work can damage others' trust for me, and can therefore limit my opportunities. In this way, your qualities set you up for great success in the future.
Also, I am similarly a poor communicator. The difficulty of communication is that one must be proactive, and realize that one must inform others about something well in advance. Failing to communicate early and thoroughly has hurt me, my well-being, and my grades in various ways, such as when I did not inform my professor of my absence until the week before I would be missing class. This hurt me by keeping me from receiving an extension on an assignment due that day, where good communication would have improved my relationship with my professor and my grades.
