Internship Work Skills Class Blog: Week 2

This week was my first week working at my internship for Earthscope, and already the pieces we are writing and the people we are interviewing are exciting and eye opening. I used my Work Readiness Skills in the following situations this week:
I used the skill "Is Dedicated" throughout this entire week by demonstrating a willingness to work and by being present and friendly to other teammates and classmates at both my internship and my internship class. More specifically, I asked many questions and was proactive about catching up on my missed work from last week. Also, I kept a positive and optimistic outlook even though I was a few steps behind everyone else. I was also present and mindful in both situations, especially in the class, where I outspokenly answered many questions. I am particularly proud of myself for using this work skill because I usually am very shy and tentative in new places, but this time I decided to go for it.
I used the skill "Is Professional" this week by being consistently on time, dressing nicely, and working hard, even though I was still recovering from a cold I caught in Mexico. I also submitted my blog post to my Blogmaster Julia a full two days before it was due so she could take her time with editing it.

This week, I struggled to use the Work Skill "Can Communicate Effectively". I had to ask questions frequently at both my internship and my internship class because I hadn't listened or understood directions the first time. This is a frustrating problem for me because I also do this a lot in school, and will need to work hard to improve on it. I also struggled with this by raising my hand before I thought about how to word my answer and stuttering often, which shows that I did not intentionally think about my purpose before speaking.

  1. It's certainly important to be dedicated when you're coming into something behind. You don't seem like you're lost at all during our internship, so I guess your dedication worked well!

  2. It's good that your internship is interesting for you! And you were really proactive and you always participate a lot, which is really good for learning and communication and everything. It's also good to be professional and I struggle with the communication as well. Keep it up!
