Currently most of my goals are short-term goals, which have a relatively small, indirect impact on the path of my life. One of these goals, for example, is to complete all of my summer homework well before the first day of school to ensure that I do not have to undergo the stress of cramming it all into the last few days of summer. While this does seem to impact my immediate well-being and potentially my grades, it has little to do with my more significant, long-term goals. One of these long-term goals is to become a self-sufficient reporter, able to research, write, and edit my own reports and have them published by the time my internship ends this fall. By achieving this goal, I will have made great progress in preparing myself to become a professional reporter.
Additionally, I currently have several habits that could potentially keep me from making good relationships and achieving the best opportunities in the workplace, such as arriving late, poorly communicating, and procrastinating with work until just before it is due. In the future, I aim to develop the habit of focusing on my tasks and working diligently on them ahead of time, to ensure I do not procrastinate and can complete the best possible work.
Lastly, I currently have one major ally, who can significantly help me in the workplace and provide me with valuable opportunities, in my boss. She provides feedback for all that I write, can answer all of my work-related questions, and provide me with fantastic relations and interviews. In the future, I hope to have an ally in my current professor. As he is a professor in astronomy, and I hope to someday study astronomy, I feel he can provide me with very valuable support and relevant information.
@Sean: Your reporter-related goals are ambitious, but I think are clear and will help you to be focused and find purpose in many other activities. I think you also named some very important habits to break in order to work toward success. Have you thought about working with an "accountability buddy" on your procrastination? To break down your work and do work at the same time to check on each other? I know that helps many people (including me) in school and in their work. It is great to hear you have such a great ally in your boss. The feedback you are given will no doubt improve your skills over the summer.
ReplyDeleteThat is one of my short goals too. I also don't want to be stressing in my last few days of summer.
