Work Readiness Skills

This week during my internship, I practiced communicating effectively.  As the leader for my interview group, I was responsible for setting up an interview with a knowledgable person, so that we can create radio stories from the recording.  I had to communicate clearly what times we were available for a conference call, who would be interviewing, what the radio audience demographic is like, and other information about Earthscope Media.  I have successfully lined and interview up.
I'm very glad I was able to work on my communication skills, because last week during my internship I struggled with communicating effectively over the phone while doing another interview.  However, I think as my confidence is builds, my communication skills improve.

Another skill I worked a lot on this week is working with others.  In my internship it's very important to work with my group members to write interview questions, edit blogs, share notes and information and ask questions.  I am usually pretty good at working in a group, but I found that this week it was a challenge because I had to consistently check both of my emails and Facebook to make sure I was responding to everyone I was working with, and I was very patient with people who took a long time to respond.

Work Readiness at Internship

This week in my internship I demonstrated the importance of literacy within a workplace. The radio station was running a bit behind schedule, so when the 2:00pm required station identification and public service announcement readings came around, I had to read them on the air without having read over them in the past. I learned that without literacy, my readings would have been far less fluid, and likely would have been unclear and choppy to a listener.

This week I also practiced diligence when I was operating the radio's soundboard for a an interview segment. I had to be extremely careful with the microphone volumes, backround music, and timing, which would not have been at all possible had I not been paying close attention to make sure the job was done without error. I learned that in order to carry out a job to its fullest potential, one must always work with diligence and give their complete and undivided attention to any given task.
Internship Work Skills Class Blog: Week 2

This week was my first week working at my internship for Earthscope, and already the pieces we are writing and the people we are interviewing are exciting and eye opening. I used my Work Readiness Skills in the following situations this week:
I used the skill "Is Dedicated" throughout this entire week by demonstrating a willingness to work and by being present and friendly to other teammates and classmates at both my internship and my internship class. More specifically, I asked many questions and was proactive about catching up on my missed work from last week. Also, I kept a positive and optimistic outlook even though I was a few steps behind everyone else. I was also present and mindful in both situations, especially in the class, where I outspokenly answered many questions. I am particularly proud of myself for using this work skill because I usually am very shy and tentative in new places, but this time I decided to go for it.
I used the skill "Is Professional" this week by being consistently on time, dressing nicely, and working hard, even though I was still recovering from a cold I caught in Mexico. I also submitted my blog post to my Blogmaster Julia a full two days before it was due so she could take her time with editing it.

This week, I struggled to use the Work Skill "Can Communicate Effectively". I had to ask questions frequently at both my internship and my internship class because I hadn't listened or understood directions the first time. This is a frustrating problem for me because I also do this a lot in school, and will need to work hard to improve on it. I also struggled with this by raising my hand before I thought about how to word my answer and stuttering often, which shows that I did not intentionally think about my purpose before speaking.

Work Readiness Skills

Positive:
During the past week of my internship, I successfully communicated with members of my group, my boss, and the man I interviewed. First, I volunteered to coordinate my group's interview of a certain guest, emailing each member of the group each day leading up to the interview to make sure they knew when the interview was, what questions they would be asking, and in what order we would be asking our questions. I also coordinated with my boss, letting her know I would be absent a day in the coming weeks, as to assure my absence will not be unexpected or problematic. Lastly, I coordinated with my interviewee, assuring that he was prepared for the interview, and knew exactly when and how to phone in to the conference call.
I also worked diligently this past week, as I thoroughly prepared for the interview. I not only researched the interviewee's career and accomplishments, but I researched the entire field of ecology and engineering that related to his job, and relevant current events. This diligent work allowed me to be fully prepared for the interview and make it as informative and meaningful as possible.

Negative:
I did not work well with others as well as possible. Although I successfully completed all of my work, and informed my teammates of what their responsibilities were, I did not ensure that they were as prepared as possible for the interview. I could've helped them by showing where they could've done their research, or by checking in with them after completing my own research so that they were as informed as I was.
Also, I was not as professional as I could've been. Although I prepared well for my interview, I did not conduct it as professional as possible, as I did not mute my phone or advise others to mute their phones, and due to this, various background noises damaged the quality of our recorded interview, and could potentially limit the material we can use from our recording. Obviously, this fault could seriously hurt my ability to succeed in my internship.

Work Readiness Skills

Positive
Diligence—The first week of our internship, our supervisor, Catriona, announced that we were going to be doing interviews with prominent environmental leaders. I was very excited to do this, so I took initiative and contacted my group members and was very involved in the process of formulating questions. I felt that this dedication helped me be very prepared for the interview, and I now feel confident that I have good content for my radio story.
Working with others—For most of our internship, we are working in smaller groups with several other interns. The first few weeks of my internship my group communicated very well with each other both in coordinating questions and in making sure that we were doing the necessary work and research to prepare for the interview. As a result, our group felt very confident asking our questions at the interview.
Negative
Communication—I will be missing several days of my internship next week and the week after, and although my supervisor knows this, thus far I have not asked her about the work I need to make up. I need to become better at communicating with her in advance about what needs to get done, as now I have very little time before I leave to complete make-up work. I am often shy or hesitant to write an email or contact people, and I need to become better at this.

Work Readiness

Positive:
Can work with others. I am an extrovert. Talking to new people and working with others not only comes easy to me, but is my strong suite. I create a great sense of joy when meeting new people and talking to strangers. For example, during my internship, we must interview others about there jobs for environmental sciences. When asking them questions and learning about there passions, I not only learn about there jobs, but I learn and become greater knowledgeable at social skills, especially completing the difficult and sometimes intimidating tasks of talking to professional adults. Because of this, I challenge myself everyday in an exiting way by putting myself out there, making mistakes, and becoming more comfortable with working with my teachers, classmates, and those superior to me.
Is dedicated. Throughout my school career, I have always been able to work my hardest and to be dedicated with every activity I am involved in. During my internship, I missed the first week due to a community service trip. Because of this, I got caught up with the intern work on my trip and came into the next class prepared and ready for anything. Not only in school am I dedicated, but I am dedicated through my sports that I play year round. I hope going into the future, I will keep up this dedication and have the optimism and creativity that comes from dedication.

Negative;
Is literate. In middle school, I became extremely comfortable with Mac computers. I know almost everything there is to know about Apple technology. I am able to improvise, adapt, and overcome with the technical difficulties that may sometimes come from Apple. In high school, I had to make the transition from Macs to PCs and Dells which has been a struggle. I now have to break old habits that I have used for Macs consistently and constantly remember how PCs and Dells function. Throughout my internship we are mostly using PCs which takes more time and is not automatic for me. I hope to soon become adept with PCs, therefore becoming mastery to more technology based assignments.

Using my Work Readiness Skills during my Internship

Over the summer, I am participating in an internship called EarthScope. I am working with other teenagers living across the county to learn about current environmental issues and sustainability in our world and how to educate the public using radio, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Postive:

The first skill that I used very well was communicating effectively with my project group, supervisor, and interviewee. My group's goal was to research about our interviewee (Christian Frankenburg) and his studies, come up with questions to ask him during the radio interview, send them to our supervisor for any last revisions, and lastly complete the interview. I was able to keep in contact over text and email with my group and communicate successfully to create or interview questions. Once our questions were completed I contacted our supervisor and thought through what I wanted to say and clearly stated what I needed from her. When the day of the interview came and I was speaking with Dr. Frankenburg, I was able to ask him my questions in a simple and definitive way. I learned that being able to communicate at any job where community outreach and education is involved, you need to be able to communicate effectively with others.
The second skill that I demonstrated was being able to work with others. All of my group members had different opinions and perspectives about the process of conducting an interview, but I was open to their ideas and able to back down when they wanted to express themselves. I was not afraid to say my own thoughts and opinions to the rest of the group. I learned a lot about collaboration, and that every single member of a group whether they are a leader or a wall-flower needs to be able to stand down to let others speak their mind and respect their thoughts but also be able to actively contribute to their group project.

Negative:

During my internship, I noticed that I need to work on being more literate. Dr. Frankenburg, my interviewee, is studying the science of measuring Chlorophyll Fluorescence from space (a very very complicated process), and in order to ask appropriate  questions I needed to do lots of research about this topic. I tried reading lots and lots of articles and powerpoints but was still pretty confused about the concept. I feel that my interview questions could be improved if I was able to have a higher level of reading comprehension. I learned that if I want to later work in the scientific field, it is very important to be able to read an article and later have at least a basic understanding of what I just read.
Lastly, I would also like to improve on being able to serve the needs of others. When my group was calling Dr. Frankenburg for the interview we were having a lot of technical difficulties. I was getting very tense in our situation worrying a lot about ruining the interview and getting the radio show canceled. I now know that when I am stressed I need to be able to stay calm and help my other group members work out the problem.

Using Work Readiness Skills

Using Work Readiness Skills:

Strengths:

- On one of the days of my internship, I had to leave early for basketball practice. I communicated with my internship advisor, Catriona, to notify her that I had to leave early. If she was not satisfied with me leaving early, I told her I could stay, but I was allowed to leave early. Because I told her so far in advance, she was able to email me what we would be doing that day at the internship so I was informed about the material we would cover. Turns out we ended early and I didn't miss anything. But I'm glad I was able to communicate with my internship advisor proficiently. I learned that communication can pay off in the long run.

- This week in our internship, we interviewed a German scientist named Christian Frankenberg. We performed a conference call over the phone to interview him about his new discoveries involving chlorophyll fluorescence. When we were choosing who would prompt the questions, no one was volunteering. We were all nervous, but we finally picked people to ask the questions. I ended up being one of those people. Next, we had to decide who would start the interview. Again, no one volunteered. I was out front and honest. I said I would do it, but it might not be perfect because I was very nervous. Everyone said I would do fine, and they appreciated my honesty. In the end, honesty was valuable because my teammates could expect what would happen.

Weaknesses:

- One of my weaknesses I experienced throughout the week was my level of dedication. Before conducting our interviews at EarthScope, we had to formulate interview questions amongst the group. Instead of completing the questions efficiently, I didn't finish them until the night before the interview. Our work wasn't completed efficiently, and it was stretched out throughout the week. I should have gotten the work done early in the week. Then I could have reviewed the questions later in the week to improve their quality.

- Another weakness I experienced throughout the week was my professionalism. The first week of the internship, I showed up dressed in business casual wardrobe. My internship supervisor, Catriona, said I could come in more casual clothing. I think I dressed too comfortably this week for an internship. To show that I'm committed and interested in the internship, I should come looking professional. This could also apply when I started working in a career.

Week 2 - Work Readiness Skills

Week 2 - Work Readiness Skills

Example of using one of the Work Readiness Skills in a positive way that supported my success:
I used diligence in my work, making sure I was detail orientated and asked any questions that would make my work process easier.
I was professional, looking and acting appropriate so I could make a good first impression.

What I learned from my example:

I learned that everyday something is required of you and it is your responsibility to out forth your best work, and that being professional is key to showing your boss that you can handle the job.

Example of a Work Readiness Skill Weakness that held me back this week.  Explain what needs to change or what you need to do differently:
One weakness that held me back this week was my communication; I was shy because I was meeting new people and could have been more vocal with everyone. In the future I will speak more confidentially.

Week 2 Work Readiness

Work  Readiness:

POSITIVE:
-Honesty: I emailed the person in charge of my internship and honestly let her know some concerns I've been having

-Tolerance and Respect: I respected the opinions around me when we had a group discussion on the topic of "Cadillac Desert."

NEGATIVE:
-Dedication: I wasn't as dedicated as I could of been, quite frankly because I was overwhelmed. I find myself holding back because its summer and I've been pushing myself all year so I want to be more relaxed. I should try to be more dedicated with the work load.

- Literacy: I had to ask people several times to help me with my computer during class so I hope I can improve and move faster with simple computer tools.

My Internship Week 2 (Readiness Skills)

This week at my internship I finalized the three videos that I was making. They were all about the problems that aging investors face, more specifically about the symptoms of Dementia. I used a program called Powtoon to create animated introductions and conclusions for all three videos, and then inserted them into the videos. I also did a few tweaks to the videos, including removing some green bars around them. I had trouble sleeping this week, so I was not as productive as I could have been.

My Triumphs

  • Is honest — I generally tried to be honest with my boss while working on my videos. I would honestly admit my progress, and even admitted to being lazy while not on the job.
  • Acts with Diligence — I generally tried to make sure that I understood what to do and I often discussed projects with my boss, sometimes even showing examples, to ensure that I was good with them.

My Fails

  • Is tolerant and respectful — Although I was generally okay at this, when the boss consistently complained about the video being out of sync, I ignored the issue, claiming it to be a result of lag. I am not sure how right I am, but I am only now looking into the issue.
  • Can communicate effectively — Talking with others is something I am not naturally good at, due to my slight Autism and general habit of working alone. Because of this, I have a difficult time discussing issues with the videos with my boss. The desync issue with my boss is not the only example. I also had a little bit of difficulty in describing some of the side effects of removing the green bars. It took some time for me to explain that cropping the green bars would out black bars in their place, however we were able to work out a solution.

Next week, I will be doing my work independently at home, as the boss will be on vacation. Hopefully I will be able to fix the desync issues and get some sleep so I am more productive.

Work Readiness Skills

In my internship at Earthscope, I used Work Readiness skills to my advantage.  I have worked so far with diligence on the given assignments.  For example, we were required to write questions in order to interview, and there was a lot of research required to create these questions, and then ask them in an orderly fashion to the person we were interviewing.  This took not only diligence, but dedication.  It was necessary to be dedicated to the topic in order to be completely involved and interested in our work.  Because of these skills, I have thoroughly learned about this area of knowledge, and will soon be doing a radio report on it.
So far, I don't think I have shown too many weaknesses with my Work Readiness Skills.  Probably one I could work on however, would be communicating effectively, as it is a vital tool for this internship and the work we are currently doing.

Work Readiness Skills

Positive ways in which I used the Work Readiness Skills in my internship include:
1) I was able to communicate well with team members through social media and Google Drive to prepare for an interview we conducted later on. I learned that you should always start on projects early so that you don't have to rush to complete them before a certain deadline.
2) I was honest in that the interview questions I sent to my supervisor didn't get to her email somehow, but I explained the situation and resolved it. I learned that it's best to be completely honest in a workplace situation because otherwise, things will get more confusing than necessary.

Ways in which I my Work Readiness Skill weakness/area of growth held me back or caused me to have to work harder are:
1) I was not entirely diligent because I procrastinated researching my interviewee and coming up with questions to ask her until near the deadline. Thus, I had to work harder to meet the deadline.

Work Readiness Skills

At my internship, Earthscope, on Monday last week, we were required to come up with interview questions to ask an environmentalist, and I worked with dedication to research the interviewee and develop questions about her research.
I communicated effectively with my group of three other members to discuss the research and the questions and to decide which questions to ask the interviewee. Thus, in this instance, I worked with dedication and communication, which helped me get my work done efficiently.
I do have weaknesses, but none of my weaknesses were apparent in this last week's work, because we haven't had to do much work yet. The first class was mainly just for formality and basics; so far so good.

Habits:
Now: A good habit I have is that I'm very organized and keep a calendar with a list of what I have to do every day. However, I've learned that I'm bad at delegating work - I tend to take it all upon myself to complete - and I am an extreme procrastinator.
Future: I would like to procrastinate less and learn how to properly delegate work.

Allies:
Now: My current allies are my friends, family, coaches, and teachers.
Future: I would like to obtain allies in my academic and career-related fields of interest.

Goals, Habits, and Allies by Genevieve Finn

Goals:
I want to become a better writer over the course of the summer. I will do this by blogging weekly about my internship and trying to write something - a poem, an essay, a journal entry, something - every single day. I want to specifically improve my writing by learning how to write with conciseness and fluidity, instead of rambling and using complicated words.
I also want to learn more about environmental science over the summer. I will do this by actively participating in my internship and asking questions. This goal is measurable because I can explain what I learned to my little brother and see if he understands it or not.

Habits:
I want to continue working in a timely fashion by arriving at my internship promptly and getting all my work done on time. This is a great habit to build on because time management is key in real life jobs and workplaces.
I also want to be more organized and not lose all my stuff like I usually do. This skill is especially important in my internship now because I will be working with a team of people to report on issues and will need to pull my fair share of the weight.

Allies:
My allies are my parents and teachers, specifically my English teacher from last year Mrs. Kraus. I hope to gain more allies throughout the summer.

Goals, Habits, and Allies

Goals
Organization
I want to be much less cluttered in my overall organization of belongings and work. This will require the breaking of some built up habits that have caused me to disregard being organized, so although it is a realistic goal it may take a sizable amount of time to achieve.
Guitar
Although I have played the trumpet for almost seven years, I have always wanted to learn how to play guitar. My goal would be the achieve an intermediate skill level by the end of the summer, which I will accomplish by practicing as often as possible.
Habits
Response Times
I have a particulary bad habit for not responding to texts or emails within a reasonable timeframe. More often than not it is the fact that I don't enjoy texting or writing emails rather than simply not wanting to respond to someone. This habit is especially important to fix as soon as possible, because it is equally as unprofessional as it is potentially harmful to other people's feelings.
Work Ethic
I have a habit of only fully applying myself in work that I find particularly interesting. I want to be able to improve my work ethic by exerting the same amount of effort on all aspects of a job, regardless of whether or not I find it interesting.
Allies
Zach Mclane- Skilled video editor/producer
Annika Williams- Advanced Mathematician
Future Allies- I would like to be allied with someone with extensive experience in the field of creative writing.

Goals

My current goals are to improve my dedication and quality of work when working in my internship. My future goals are to keep improving as an individual by growing as a person when learning something new everyday.

My habits are being easily distracted which often leads to incomplete work or assignments.

Some people that can be my allies to whom I may seek for advice or look up to, may be my supervisor, counselor, and parents.

My goals, habits, and allies

Currently most of my goals are short-term goals, which have a relatively small, indirect impact on the path of my life. One of these goals, for example, is to complete all of my summer homework well before the first day of school to ensure that I do not have to undergo the stress of cramming it all into the last few days of summer. While this does seem to impact my immediate well-being and potentially my grades, it has little to do with my more significant, long-term goals. One of these long-term goals is to become a self-sufficient reporter, able to research, write, and edit my own reports and have them published by the time my internship ends this fall. By achieving this goal, I will have made great progress in preparing myself to become a professional reporter.
Additionally, I currently have several habits that could potentially keep me from making good relationships and achieving the best opportunities in the workplace, such as arriving late, poorly communicating, and procrastinating with work until just before it is due. In the future, I aim to develop the habit of focusing on my tasks and working diligently on them ahead of time, to ensure I do not procrastinate and can complete the best possible work.
Lastly, I currently have one major ally, who can significantly help me in the workplace and provide me with valuable opportunities, in my boss. She provides feedback for all that I write, can answer all of my work-related questions, and provide me with fantastic relations and interviews. In the future, I hope to have an ally in my current professor. As he is a professor in astronomy, and I hope to someday study astronomy, I feel he can provide me with very valuable support and relevant information.

My Goals, Habits, and Allies

Goals:

Now:      To finish my internship feeling that I've completed great work and have left a
                           good impression.

In the Future:   To get a job that interests me, challenges me, and gives me benefits for my
hard work once I've graduated from college.

Habits:

Now:       I have a habit of re-reading and triple checking my work to make sure there are no
mistakes. This helps when writing and editing radio shows at EarthScope.

In the Future:  I want a habit of organization in the future. Sometimes when my work
is everywhere and discombobulated, I get nervous that I forgot something.

Allies:

Now:       My English teacher, Ms. Greene, is always on my side and helping me with my
essays. She criticizes them honestly to help me.

In the Future:    I wish to have an ally with a science teacher. Science is the field I want to enter
so they could help me find connections with other people in the field.

1. Get all A's through senior year

2. I have a habit of being lazy, so I need to get a job

Future habits:
1. I want to do everything well, even if it's only graded on completion, because it can help me learn
2. I want to have a habit of working harder

Current allies:
1. My parents and my sister are good allies, because they're successful and can give me advice
